Undercliff vineyard was established in 1990 with Semillon and Shiraz varieties that thrived in the rich alluvial soils. An olive grove was also established. More recently other grape varieties have been planted such as Chambourcin, Chardonnay and Muscat.
The Undercliff Estate of over 100 acres is nestled in a picturesque valley about 1.5 kilometres above Wollombi Village. The vineyard has about nine acres under vine and is generally protected from extreme weather conditions by the surrounding hills. The soils are rich alluvial flat sandy loam with a clay underbase.
The clay quarry for the 19th century Wollombi brickworks is adjacent to the vineyards, it produced a rich red clay used in the construction of the historic village of Wollombi. The quarry is now a billabong fed by a subterranean water table providing irrigation for the vineyard.
Undercliff was proclaimed and settled as a farm in 1846 and still retains the original timber slab homestead and farm sheds.Undercliff vineyard is maintained by Darren ("Osie") Oswald and his team of assistants
